When packing, use new boxes and fresh tape – and never use a box that's been wet.
Resist the urge to use newspapers and purchase clean paper.
Choose a room to hold packed boxes and do a few each day.
Use small boxes to pack books and lay them flat so the spines don't break.
Use throw pillows to pad boxes you're going to use for small breakable objects.
Always mark boxes with their contents and what room it should go to.
Pack items in a suitcase you'll need the day after your move and place it in the trunk of your car (a change of clothes, sheets, towels, toiletries).
Create a “first box” (mark it as such) containing toilet tissue, paper towels, dish and hand soap.
Keep your medications, wallet and credit cards with you at all times.
If you have a pet, be sure you pack the water and food bowls along with the food so that they are handy. If you have a cat, make sure you have the litter box.
Tape together all those long-handled items–rakes, shovels, brooms, mops, etc.
If you have to disassemble anything, place the screws, bolts or brackets into a zip-lock bag and tape it to the item.

Tape the remote control to the TV.
Make a list of service/utility company phone numbers in case of problems when you arrive at your new home (such as the water and electric companies).
Do a complete walk-through of the home you are leaving before you shut the door behind you – look in all the closets, drawers and cupboards.
And do get a reputable moving company – one that is licensed, bonded and insured.
